(High Point, NC) Silver Hare Racing made the cross country trip to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to compete in the third round of the Trans Am Series Presented by Pirelli TA2 national championship. With team owner and driver Maurice Hull not in attendance, it was left to Tyler Kicera (no. 5 Waukegan Farms, Silver Hare Ford Mustang) and Michael Self (no. 7 Sinclair Oil, Silver Hare Chevrolet Camaro) to deliver results for the team.
The event began Thursday afternoon with a test session, then official practice and qualifying on Friday. Self and Kicera adapted quickly and the crew worked to improve the handling of both cars throughout the weekend. Self qualified in fifth and Kicera in seventh positions for the one-hundred mile race.
“The guys have done a really nice job in the shop getting everything prepared the last couple of weeks,” said Self. “We had a few setbacks at Road Atlanta, so we were all eager to get back to the track and put that behind us. Both cars had speed right off the trailer at Laguna, which is a big deal for us since we don’t have any prior experience or notes at the track.”
Thirty-three TA2 cars took the green flag on Saturday and both Silver Hare Racing drivers were focused on settling into a consistent pace. Multiple full-course cautions early on brought the field back together with Self and Kicera in a four-way battle for fourth on the restarts. As the race progressed, Self and Kicera ran sixth and seventh respectively. With Self’s handling starting to go away, on lap thirty-three, Kicera overtook him in turn 2. Kicera crossed the finish line in sixth and Self in seventh positions.
“After the luck we’ve had to start the year, this result gives us something positive to build on”, said Kicera. “Our car was on different ends of the spectrum handling-wise as we made adjustments and we ended up on the really free side for the race. It was tough out there and I had to be so patient on throttle. In the end, it was a solid result, and we’ll move on to Lime Rock in a few weeks and try to get on the podium”.
Next up for Silver Hare Racing is the fourth round of the championship at Lime Rock Park on Memorial Day weekend.
